Culminating blog reflection

The capstone project has been overwhelming and stressing over all. Aside from the paper completing my hours actually wasn't a hassle. I actually enjoyed going to the place where I volunteered, which was at the spruce community learning center. I was practically a teachers assistant, I would help the children and the teachers with whatever they needed. If students had questions I would help them solve whatever they needed. If the teacher needed help setting up I would help, along with passing out papers and stuff along those lines.

I've gain many things from this experience, most importantly this made me realize that I actually do want to work with children in the future. My dream has always been to work with children in whatever field I chose to work in. I was pretty certain this was something I would like to do since I have experience with children due to the fact that's have 3 younger brothers and my grandma is a babysitter. This has let be around children and gave me a sense of what it takes to work with them. After being able to have the opportunity to work with children I realized that I do have the patience and I feel like I will succeed if I choose to work in a field with children.

My biggest obstacle was probably finding a mentor. I really wanted to find a mentor at a preschool or somewhere that worked with you get children, because the kids I worked with were fourth graders. In the long run this will be a positive thing because i have had experience with different ages. Another obstacle I had was trying not to be a friend to the children, instead I had to play the teacher role but it was hard at times because I had to be in a way strict, and I felt like that wasn't my place. As I continued my hours I realized that I had to be a role model for them so I kinda had to firm with them, and keep a friend relationship as well.

I was getting close to finishing my hours, and I continued on to May where I did a total of 5 hours and 20 mins. I attended my hours on the days of May 1st, 8th, and 14th. The children continued to do what they have done and I continued to the same witch was help and assist the teacher and kids with whatever they needed. They did various things like science experiments where they tested what kind of soda would clean a penny. They also had anti bullying week which I thought was really cool cus they did various activities teaching the, his to prevent it and how to not be a bully themselves. I have now finished my hour but I made Commitment and I will continue until the end of the school year because its actually a pretty fun environment and I enjoy going.

Mentor hours

I continued my hours in April. I went the 3 other different times, which was on the 15th 17th and 24th. On these days I did a total of 5 hours and 20 mins. My routine was usual, I came and it was playground time, I spent some time playing with them. The day continued and they went into hw time, I helped several children. I started to noticed that a lot of the kids would seek for my help but their intentions were to just get the answer. I acted as If I were there teacher and didn't just Give it to them I read the instructions over and over and did further explanation, with a little bit of encouragement they got it.

Mentor hours

3hours 20 min.
This week the children at the spruce community learning center were still on culture week. They had various activities revolving around their culture. I was there to help them out when they created their flags. Each student had to draw the flag from we're their family is from, and along with that they had to make a diagram discribing their culture and the different types of traditions their families have. The student then had to present their drawing and diagram to the class. My task was to assist them in any questions they had , and most kids asked me for help in spelling in Spanish. The days I attended were march 18 and march 20

On the second week of march I volunteered 2 days, wich were the 11th and the 13th. This week the children focused on just doing learning activities. They would switch children into different classrooms for different type of activities. So this week I got to work with 3rd and 5th graders, and fourth graders which are usually the kids I work with. I got to help them with their activities and hw if they had any.

Mentor hours

5hours
On the first week of march, I finally started doing my hours for the senior project. I attended the spruce community learning center on the days of March 4th and March 6th. On these days I got to do a total of five hours. On march 4th was my first day and I got introduced to the children. Right after I got introduced they went directly into there second half of their hw time so I helped them with that. Their days starts off with a snack, hw part 1, playground time, hw part 2, and an activity. My normal time of arrival will be during playground time. That day I got their a little late so I only helped with hw time and during the activity. Since I arrived late I stayed a little longer to do more time, so I stayed and helped clean.
